VanDoorn Beats Hantz To The Checkered Flag At Winchester
Johnny VanDoorn’s last few trips to the Winchester Speedway have produced good runs without a win. Monday, VanDoorn entered his name on the winners list at the high banked half mile edging Scott Hantz at the line by half a car length.
After an optional day of practice on Saturday, the Kaos Motorsports team went to work on Sunday getting the #61 Jegs.com Impala ready to practice and qualify. After Sunday’s first practice session, the team was sixth on the speed chart, while using still using their tires from Saturday. In the final practice, Johnny put the #61 at the top of the charts with a time of 15.583. Feeling good about their chances for qualifying, the team went to work to get the car ready to time in for the Monday race.
Johnny drew a late number for qualifying and was the 22nd car to take time. His best lap was a time of 15.530 which was good enough for only 6th quick. The team was disappointed with that time and went right to work getting the car ready for the race. “We made a mistake when we went out to qualify. Our car is better than that. I wish we could do that lap over again, but we have to move on and get ready for the race. The only good thing that came out of that qualifying effort is the fact we are starting on the front row with the inversion” a dejected VanDoorn said.
Monday morning the team arrived to the track early and made some final adjustments to the #61 car. The teams were given a five lap warm up session and Johnny was at the top of the sheet when the session concluded. His only comment on the radio after those five laps: “mission accomplished”.
Starting on the outside of the front row is the preferred groove around Winchester. When the green flag dropped, Johnny and pole sitter TJ Reaid were door to door for a lap before Reaid took the lead going into turn one. Johnny rode close to his rear bumper for the next 35 laps. Johnny took the lead passing Reaid between turns three and four using a lapped car to his advantage. Johnny was setting a very fast race pace lapping up to 5th place. At one point Johnny had about a half lap lead on second place and about a three quarter lap lead on third place. A caution on lap 68 took Johnny’s lead away. On the radio under that caution, Johnny reported that he was feeling a vibration and that is was getting worse as the race went on.
When the green came back out, Johnny jumped back to a comfortable lead with Reaid and Scott Hantz rounding out the top three cars. Reaid’s strong run for the day ended on lap 93 with an engine failure that brought out the last caution of the day with seven laps to go. Johnny reported that the vibration was getting worse and he could ride it out, but the vibration was affecting the handling on his car. The race restarted with Hantz closing in on Johnny with five laps to go. Johnny and Hantz were nose to tail and door to door throughout the last five laps. Hantz actually had the nose of his car passed Johnny and Johnny fought back to get the lead. Coming out of turn four, the crowd was on their feet as Johnny and Hantz raced to the line. Johnny won by a fender. “I can’t believe what just happened!” Johnny screamed in the radio. “We won at Winchester!!!”
After all the Victory Lane hat dance and photos, Johnny talked about the great finish. “The last five laps was the hardest I have ever raced. I would not feel comfortable racing side by side like that with many guys going that fast here. But Scott Hantz is a great racer. Racing with him like that was fun. Hopefully the fans liked the ending. All I heard from my spotter off of turn four was “inside, inside, inside, at your door….we won”. I can’t thank my team enough for the work they put in this weekend either. I was pretty down after qualifying, but we came together and won at Winchester!” VanDoorn said.
“I also would like to thank JEGS.com, Magic Transportation, Baker Engineering, and Port City Racecars. Bringing JEGS to Victory Lane in their first race with us is great, especially since Jeg Jr. won at Indy this weekend too. And Magic, Baker and Port City helped us put this team together when many others thought we were crazy. Hopefully, we can get some more wins to thank them for believing in us” VanDoorn added.
Johnny and his team will be heading to the Auto City Speedway on September 11 with the outlaw late model. The next CRA race will be September 18th at ORP.

Coopersville's Johnny VanDoorn Wins at Winchester!
VanDoorn Hangs on to Win
Scott Hantz fell back, caught up when there was a caution, and then tried to slide past John VanDoorn on the last lap for an exciting finish of the CRA Super Series, McGunegill Engine Performance 100. VanDoorn and TJ Reaid jumped out to an early lead, and stretched it up to a half lap with Reaid in front and VanDoorn tight on his tail. Vandoorn found an opening, powered by and took off building a lead of almost a hlaf a lap on everyone and nearly 3/4 a lap on the third place car of Hantz. On the 68th lap after 67 green flag laps, a car brushed the wall causing only the second caution of the race. While Hantz and Reaid fought for second VanDoorn again took off before the other cars began to catch him. Reaid was closing quickly with only seven laps to go when his engine gave out and brought out a caution flag. VanDoorn took off, leading Hantz. Hantz came back, looked under, could not make it happen and waited. VanDoorn fought an ill handling car to the end, with Hantz pulling down to finish less than a fender behind or .030 seconds.
"That was fun" VanDoorn stated. "We broke a hub with 30 to go, and I was just waiting on it to break all the wa. but it held on. Racing beside Scott Hantz, what a great way to run, outside of Scott there are not many people I trust running beside me at over 120 mph. "

MARNE -- The Auto Value Super Sprints were filled with surprises at Berlin Raceway on Saturday night.
Jim Swain of Union City set a track record in qualifying, while Teddy Alberts of Kent City won his first race in the series when he took top honors in a heat race.
But there was a familiar face in Victory Lane after Mike Ling of Mt. Bridges, Ontario, Canada, won the 30-lap feature race.
“As long as we don’t break, we usually end up on the (podium),” Ling said. “It’s kind of like the track I grew up on. That’s the No. 1 thing. The second thing is that it is racy, and there is more room to maneuver. It gives everybody a line to pick.”
Ling dominated the second half of Saturday’s race, taking the lead on lap 15. He then pulled away from the field and beat out Ryan Litt by 3.716 seconds.
“We had an amazing car tonight, but I think the biggest thing was that we weren’t using up our tires, and we were able to maintain our speed,” Ling said. “As the race progressed, I believe the other guys probably started using their tires up and they were slowing down, which made us look like we were speeding up.”
“Our cars like that a little bit better,” Ling added of Saturday’s cooler temperatures. “The motor runs a little stronger and a little cleaner, and it’s a little easier on the tires because the track isn’t as greasy, and it has a little more bite.”
Swain’s lap of 12.799 seconds at 123.197 mph set a Berlin track record. Swain, who entered the race ranked second in the point standings to Kevin Feeney, finished fourth in the 18-car field.

Keeping up With Muskegon's Kody Weisner
Limeland Speedway
The final Budweiser Thunderstocks feature of the year was a fitting conclusion to the season as point’s leader Tony Anderson and runner-up Jeff Koz battled each other for the win in the 15-lap race.
UNOH Racer Kody Weisner, a winner from earlier in the season, bolted to the front at the start and held the lead over Koz and Anderson for the first six circuits. Weisner, of Muskegon, Michigan, suffered a slight bobble and that’s all it took for Jeff Koz to make a pass for the lead. On the lap eight restart it was Koz, Anderson and Weisner at the front of the field.
Anderson’s points lead was not mathematically safe entering the final race, but at 48 points it would take a near perfect night for Koz and disaster for Tony Anderson to give Koz the title. The two engaged in a stirring side-by-side battle, with Koz ultimately prevailing for the second time this season and in his stock car career at Limaland.
For Bluffton’s Tony Anderson, it marked a sixth track championship. “It started to get rough out here about a month ago and I started to back off and look to win a championship, maybe more than wins,” stated Anderson. “A lot of these guys in this class have actually stepped up and made it very competitive.”
The 12th annual King of the Quarter Mile races are 10-lap showdowns that pit the respective feature winners throughout the season against each other for thousands of dollars of additional prize money. Starting positions are determined by a random draw as young fans join in the festivities making the selections for the competing drivers.
The Thunderstocks King event was a battle of attrition with Keith Ralston, Tim Bowen, Jeff Koz and UNOH Racer Kody Weisner all challenging for supremacy during the 10-lap shootout. Ralston t-boned his car into wall on the backside, Bowen suffered a flat tire, while eventual winner Barney Craig was the beneficiary of Koz, Tony Anderson and Kody Weisner battling with each other. Craig takes home the $1,000 in a season that saw him compete only part time, in the latter stages of the season.
The final event of the 2010 season is the Limaland Motorsports Park Awards Banquet on Saturday, October 16 at the UNOH Event Center. For tickets and complete information call 419-998-3168 during regular business hours. All the latest news and information about America’s premier quarter-mile dirt track can be found at www.limaland.com. You can also find Limaland Motorsports Park on Facebook.

VanDoorn’s Bid For Three Wins In A Row Spins Out In Columbus
VanDoorn’s Bid For Three Wins In A Row Spins Out In Columbus
Johnny VanDoorn will be the first to admit that the flat tracks on the Champion Racing Association schedule are not his strong suit. He has struggled to find a setup to his liking the last couple of years. Saturday at Columbus, the 2009 CRA Champion had a fast car underneath him only to have his great run ended after contact with the leader sent both cars to the tale of the field.
The shortened schedule for the Columbus event left little track time for the 27 teams on hand for the CRA race so practice was a premium. Johnny was one of the first cars out on the track and a caution flew after two laps for a spinning car. Johnny reported that the car was two loose all the way around the track and came to the pits to have the team tighten the #61 car up. When Johnny rejoined practice, his first comment on the radio was “ this feels so much better”. The first session of practice ended and Johnny was 6th on the time sheet.
The team only had twenty minutes of practice for the second session so again, time was at a premium. Johnny made another run after a couple of adjustments and then brought the car back to the pits to make a mock qualifying effort. The team bolted on a set of sticker tires and Johnny shot to the second spot on the time sheet.
The team then started making changed for qualifying. Johnny drew a late number for the qualifying session, which gave the team some extra time to make a few changes to the car. And those changes worked as Johnny set fast time for the day with a time of 13.859. Johnny wold draw a five for the inversion, giving him the 5th starting spot.
When the race started, cautions were plenty around the tight .333 mile track. Once the field was strung out, Johnny started making his way to the lead. With about forty laps to go in the 125 lap race, Johnny made his way to second behind race leader and hometown favorite Tyler Nuckles. Johnny’s car was much better than Nuckles’ car, especially in turns 3-4 where the leader’s car was tight that he would use the brakes to get his car to turn. Each time, Johnny would be just inches off his bumper. With 30 laps to, the field was working the outside of lapped traffic when Johnny got into the rear bumper of Nuckels, spinning him out on the front stretch. Both drivers were sent to the tail of the field. Johnny would go on to finish 7th, which was a disappointment considering how great the car was all day.
“I did not what that to happen” VanDoorn said of the contact with Nuckels. “I knew he was really tight, especially in 3 and 4. He was almost stopping to get his car to turn. My car was great through there. I would be able to get back to the throttle when he was getting on his brakes to turn. We were on the outside of the lapped cars and I got into him-and that was not planned at all. I was just riding there hoping to pressure him into making a mistake.” VanDoorn added. “The bright side is that we finally found a flat track setup that seems to work. That was the best flat track car I have ever had, especially after about 5 laps. I have been looking forward to the next three races at Winchester and Nashville all year. But after this weekend, I’m really looking forward to ORP as well.”
The next race for Johnny and the Kaos Motorsports team is Labor Day, September 6th at the Winchester Speedway.
The point standings are:
1) John Van Doorn 740
2) Scott Hantz 686
3) Tommy St. John 664
4) Terry Fisher Jr. 638
5) Brian Campbell 636
